Finbarr Waldron obtained a BE in electrical engineering from University College Cork in 1991 and Higher Diploma in Microelectronics from University College Cork in 1996.

From 1991 to 1994, he worked at the National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC) as a research engineer, creating a reliability test laboratory and participating in a number of ESPRIT and BRITE-EURAM research projects. He also provided reliability testing for European Space Agency's Microelectronics Technology Support Laboratory (MTSL) at NMRC, including advanced microelectronic packaging.

In 1994 he became Industry Services Manager for the Interconnection and Packaging Group, now with 60 client companies.

Since 1997 has been responsible for expanding NMRC activities, managing client contracts as well as a number of EU and National Research projects including two recent FP5 contracts (MESMERIC & DEVASTATION) as well as a current Enterprise Ireland project on lead-free solder interconnect (DESREL). He is also responsible for the day-to-day management of the NMRC's RIMDAC contract, providing visiting EU researchers with access to the NMRC research infrastructure.
