A major research area is microtechnology for advanced measurement and control systems.

Facilities include material characterisation laboratories.

SINTEF has carried out work on lead-free soldering processes, specifically on reliability aspects (materials, harsh environments). It is a partner in the NoNE-project: 'No lead in Nordic Electronics'.

SINTEF was partner in GreenPack - a Nordic project focusing on environmental issues in electronic products.

It is a partner in GreenRoSE - a major new lead-free project aimed at SME's.
