Tyndall National Institute now incorporates NMRC as a part of University College Cork, National University of Ireland. Tyndall has established a research strategy based on identifying and addressing key emerging technological challenges. The Institute's research programmes are focussed on the development of core technology competencies that will yield technology platforms for future high impact innovation and commercial exploitation.
Tyndall National Institute is Ireland's national ICT research institute and a key European research organisation. It works on innovative next-generation information and communication products and applications, carrying out research in hotonics, nanotechnology, microelectronics and ICT/bio.
Facilities include a materials characterisation polymer lab - TMA, TGA & DSC, Instron mechanical strength testers, field emission SEM, OM, Finite Element (FE) Modelling, SMT assembly line - screen print, pick & place and IR reflow, solderability testing, reliability testing including vibration & shock.
As NMRC it was a participant in the EU IDEALS lead-free soldering project. It is also a partner in FORBAIRT - Irish national project on lead-free quality & reliability and DESREL - National lead-free project - Design for Reliability - portable / wearable ICT Applications.
It has carried out lead-free projects for industry, including design of a motor drive module and a lead-free low power DC-DC converter.
